Iron Stars - roth

Roth sits in his apartment looking out the window at Pelasgon’s capital city. This is a far cry from Al-Thynnian , the Arctic world where you once owned and operated a moderate company. Constant assault by corporate rivals, a betrayal by the board of directors, and the later occupation and incorporation by the CBSS was a final nail in the coffin to any kind of corporate maneuvering. The choice came down to living as an exile on Mehani, or coming back to Pelasgon to work directly for the CBSs and its resource management division. There is a sharp knock at the apartment door .

As Roth awakens from his nap feeling exhausted, he looks over to his turned off TV and catches a glimpse of himself in the screen. A skinny man with shoulder-long black hair and a face mostly picked clean of any ascetically pleasing features. Unable to find any mask, he instead grabs the nearest object to obscure his remodelled face with and makes for the door.

He looks through the peephole, paranoid of finding someone who has read his mind and come to stop him from completing his mission.

(alright, so we'll pick up here, i think everythin still meshes okay) There is a messenger outside, and when the door doesnt open he shrugs and slides a letter through the door slot, before moving off to his other errands for the day

Roth quickly picks up the letter and opens it. "Finally something that isn't another person comes through my door" he says under his breath.

The letter is a summons, not to meet with the chairman directly but one of his agents in a nearby park tonight. You're being assigned work, but with the chance a courrier could be intercepted, the details of your coming assignment are not listed on this letter. It says only to come alone, and met at 20:00 tonight in Workers Memorial Park- a few blocks from your flat

After memorising the time and place, he puts the letter in the trash and dressing himself in some outerwear. Sighing deeply before heading out the door and checking multiple times that it's locked. "Eight something in the work park." He repeats to himself to ensure he doesn't forget the information. Roth hurries to get to the park as early as possible.

(I'd assume a scarf or something is probably available. Or whatever you'd have devised for yourself after the accident. Think your typical behind the iron curtain city)

While hurrying to the park, Roth found himself wondering what kind of work he would be doing. Fantasies of visiting colonies on distant worlds filled his head. He knew however that the work probably would be as mundane as the rest of his life.

Getting here early you can see a few families here getting some after dinner recreation in. Fathers play catch with children, others play tag, or amuse themselves on playground equipment. Someone is in the process of taking in a large kite with the last of the days wind and light. A man in a dark suit arrives at the far end of the park, and is striding purposefully toward the fountain in the middle

Remembering advice from one of the many self confidence books he has read, Roth puffs up his chest and straightens his back before walking with stiff steps toward the man in the dark suit. He then clears his throat loudly to catch the mans attention.

“Slayton. That you? If it is relax and take a seat for a minute. I’ve got a few things the party chair wanted me to convey to you”

Stitting on the edge of the fountain, Roth gestures to the man to continue while trying to loosen up his stiff posture.

"Close enough. So, we have a job for you, back on Al-Thynnian. Chance for revenge and whatnot. What do you think?"

Struggling to keep eye contact he stands back up again and says "I thought I'd never get the chase. I suppose it's a deal then." Roth awkwardly holds out his hand in front of the agent waiting for a handshake.

he shakes your hand firmly. "I needed to know you were in before I provided you with details. You've got a strong set of administrative skills on your back. We need you to look into the old books of your company once youre on planet. We think the board squirreled away massive amounts of credits and possibly physical resources- You're familiar with their workings, who the players are, and where they might have gone to ground"

"When i worked in the building we put physical transaction files on the third floor but that may not be the case anymore. I will need to infiltrate the building somehow or find a way to hide in plain sight. It's gonna be hard and possibly dangerous too but I guess I already signed up." Roth takes out his compad from a jacket pocket. "It might be a good idea to link me up to the chairman's circle so that I can call for technical support if need be."

"Do you think those files would even still be there? The corporate regime fell. "

"I guess we'll just have find out once we get there." Roth says as he starts walking away. He then stops and looks back with a questioning look on his face. "When exactly are we leaving?"

"Tomorrow morning, a shuttle will be provided for you near the chairman's compound. Use today to reflect and say goodbye to anyone you need to"

(I want to buy a laser pistol and two type A powercells before going. Is that something my character would be able to get his hands on?)

(Yes you could get your hands on that pretty readily)

"You probably have some work to get back too and i have a gun to buy so well have to talk more some other time" And with those words Roth leaves the park in search of a gun store.

(there would be an armory on any ships you'd be traveling on, so you could get one for free)

(In that case I want to buy hush, rope and a grapnel launcher.)

TL 4 Pharms are not available anywhere in the Iron Stars regions, but the rope and grapnel launcher are easy enough to procure

After leaving the park Roth buys a rope and a grapnel launcher before heading home, intending to go to bead early (aka napping on the couch for the rest of the day). He can't help but feel that this is experience will lead to a big change in his life.

The shuttle is prepped by time you wake up, and three crewmen are waiting by it to bring you back to your former home. Theyre a crude looking bunch, and the nose art features a scantily clad woman with a scar across her face shooting bolts of lighting. “Electric queen” is written under it

As Roth approaches the men he tries to crack a joke "Hi crew... uh... I think I'll leave the flying to you for now."

“There’s a cabin aboard set aside for you. It’s a short trip. Just a day. You’re free to wander the vessel once we make the jump into spike space”

"Tuff crowd." He says under his breath as he steps aboard the ship. Roth immediately starts exploring the ship, being careful not to accidentally push any buttons.

(There’s a handout on the Roll20 of what you can do on downtime. It’s a day from here to your destination)

Roth searches for an armory on the ship. His intentions are to get a laser pistol and 3 type A power cells in order to tran his shooting skill. (I imagine him doing this by pointing the unloaded gun at stuff in his cabin and pretending to fire whilst jumping around/doing combat rolls.)

A frosted planet newly discovered by the Communist Brotherhood of Stellar States. The communist leaning workers here are hiding in the mountains, and have contacted the group in order to help them in their war against Swordbreak and South Warren. A pretech battleship has crashed here and been repurposed into something of a communist fortress. There are also rumors of an underground race, lurking in the endless cave complexes and underground ruins below the mid world mountain range. After an intense battle, the cities had fallen, and the CBSS now claims official ownership of the planet

Swordbreak is where your company headquarters was formerly located, and the airport there has had the debris cleared from its runway, allowing the shuttle to set down there to refuel, and drop you off

Previously sure in his abilities, Roth now begins to doubt himself. As he steps of the ship and on to the cold ground below he if filled with dread. "This was a mistake..." He says out loud with a mixture of sadness and exasperation on his face.

The airport staff is busy working around you while you take in the scenery. The shuttle crew is involved in helping the ground group get their vehicle serviced properly now

Roth walks over to one of the crew members and stands by him until he gets noticed. "Thanks for transporting me. However it looks like you could use some more cash. If your'e willing to help me as a getaway driver for the next few days I'll pay you. What do you say?" After saying this, Roth starts wondering if he only is awkward when hi isn't talking business. "I,ll give you 50 now and 50 once you've driven me back to safety. Follow me to the car for now. We'll drive to the place I have to be at once it gets dark." (edited)

50 credits is a good enough amount to your average technician and skilled worker and they seem to be okay with that. You’re followed out of the main airport doors on to a snow covered street where rubble has piled up in a handful of places. People walk with their scarves up and hats down against the cold breeze.

As they get close to the car rental place roth stops the man and says."Okay, I'll go get the car and you just wait here." As rot begins alking he turns around. "Do you seriously not care about how shady this all sounds?" (edited)

"50 credits is a lot of money to someone in my position, and yo're offering to double that. You're also on party business. How can I say no?"

Roth smiles and walks around a bend to were he remembers a car rental place being.

The ruins of the office are present, and several of the cars are now a burning ring of wrecks- but you can see something like a temporary shack has been built, with a few of the less desirable and less sporty models out, still available to rent. It seems the arsonists here were a bit more discriminate when it came to destroying symbols of their former corporate oppressors

Roth walks from car to car looking at which one seems the fastest. "Hello! Is anybody here?"

The metal shutter of the shack rolls upward and an automated kiosk beeps cheerfully. The cars are 25 credits for a day of use. (Stat wise even though it probably won’t make a difference, they’re all standard ground cars)

Roth pays quickly and jumps in a black car, suddenly remembering that he is really bad at driving. Not wanting his new employee to realize that Roth does not in fact own a car and there fore loose respect for him, Roth tries his best to maneuver the vehicle to his friend. (Also what time of day is it?)

You crawl the vehicle down the street and bump the curb when you go to park it. He makes a frown and gestured for you to slide over into the passenger seat. You did after all hire him to drive

"She's a beauty isn't she." Roth says as he scoots over to the passenger side. "Oh, and I never asked about your name." Roth directs the man towards the corporate building making him circle around it as they gett close.

The building is partially ruined, with a large crater from an artillery shell in the front of the facade, about 2/3 of the way up. The front is fractured and a pile of rubble has fallen into the road and only enough has been cleaned up to allow traffic to pass,

Roth orders the man to stop the car on the left side of the building. He prepares his grapnel launcher and aims for the roof.

The pop up display shows it’s ready to fire and the steep angle of ascent. Serval lights change from Amber to green showing the angle is good and the magnetic grapple is charged

He pulls the trigger.

tHere is a very loud pop as the grapple fires skyward, and it lodges itself over the cement lip at the top of the building.

As Roth begins to ascend Roth looks inside the windows passing him by, scanning for a set of eyes looking his way.

You don't notice any eyes on the windows inside, or much of anything happening there at all since the structure is so damaged. You do get a waft of faint cigarette smoke. Someone must be on the roof enjoying one

"Oh my god, that was the scariest thing I have ever done!" Roth exclaims as he climbs over the roof railing.

A security guard on the roof drops his cigarette in a blind panic, and begins reaching for the weapon on his hip. He is 10m from you. (initiative)

The shot goes wide, scorching a small burn hole in the door and blistering some of the paint on it. Stunned by the return fire, the guard misses. His solid round ends up embedded in the brickwork of the roof , aimed too low

He also misses as the shot of his shoddy handgun fizzles out, failing to ignite. He ejects it with a curse as the hot casing skips across the ceiling stones

Feeling the adrenaline in his body surging, Roth calms himself and reaches out to the guards gun with his mind, intending to fling it of the roof. (edited)

Roth pulls the trigger of his extremely dangerous laser pointer, intent on frying the guards face.

The guard has a shocked look on his face as the energy beam punches through his armor. He falls to his knees, and then over on his side, dying.

Roth feels a sudden urge to puke and does so of the edge of the roof. He then uses telekinesis on his rope to dangle it over the big opening in the building and climbs down. "I did not want to do that" He thinks to himself, weirdly enough feeling disgust in place of remorse. (edited)

The breach is a shell hole that struck between three floors. You can see the interior spaces have been reinforced as best as possible and sheeted off with plastic to keep anyone from accidentally getting too close and to keep out some of the frosty weather.

He begins to swing back and forth on the rope and then he jumps at the plastic. As he gets close he uses his telekinesis to rip a hole in the plastic so that he can pass through.

You're able to pass through onto the mid level of the three damaged ones. The office spaces down here have been abandoned but you remember the archives are a floor up from here. The stairs are not guarded, though you can hear a few voices and the pounding of a hammer for a moment above

Roth covers his wound as best he can and starts walking like he belongs in the building. He hides his equipment on his person and goes up the stairs. (edited)

THe archives are down the hall, and to the right. You can see another security guard 10m from you, sitting in a chair outside them. He is engrossed in his compad, scrolling through some sort of news feed , interlaced with news stories and CBSS party literature.

Roth walks calmly over to the door to see if its unlocked.

“You just can’t go in there”. The guard stands up. “Identification please?”

"I've got orders from the higher ups and had to rush here, forgot my card at home. How could i have gotten in through the lobby if I wasn't meant to be here. Now let me through the door please."

You're not able to find information immediate to your own grievance with the company, but you were an employee here once. Not just an employee, but a very high ranking one. Remembering your old filing system, you remember a few cabinets where anyone coming in after you might not have re-filed or organized differently just yet. Your hunch hits pay dirt, and you are able to find the records the CBSS asked you to come here and retrieve. Now it's just a matter of getting out.

Rot puts the files under his arm (preferably in a folder) and heads out of the room. However as he leaves for the stairs his awkwardness returns and his composure falters. He becomes overly paranoid and beads of sweat collect on his brow.
